I find this photo to be particularly stirring. It's steamy, sneaky, and tragic all at the same time. I guess I've never seen the two of them touching before.
Remember on Mad Men when they pitched that every woman was either a Jackie or a Marilyn? I'm undoubtedly a Jackie. Which one would you be? Would anyone actually say they were a Marilyn?

wow, that is oddly intimate. who the hell took that picture! i think it would have been easier to have identified as a marilyn back then...prior to the death and the cardboardy mass-marketing of the tragic story & classic image, etc. i think i've met a couple of marilyns in my life, for sure.
ReplyDeleteI bought a piece of pie the other day and the guy who sliced it said I looked like Jackie O. The things they'll do to sell pie these days!
ReplyDeleteWhit, you DO look like Jackie O!
ReplyDeletejackie, definitely. yay brunettes!
ReplyDeleteamazing photo. i'm blonde, but i'm still a jackie.
ReplyDeleteI'd like to think I am a Jackie in a Marilyn body...
ReplyDeleteI am definitely not a Jackie. So.
ReplyDeleteI mean, what makes a Jackie? Will someone please explain?
p.s. you don't get to be a Jackie in a Marilyn body, sorry.
ReplyDeletethe jackie/marilyn thing came up in a year-end episode of "gossip girl" as well, no? the congressman's wife said it to serena, i think. or (cough) so i heard.
ReplyDeleteESB, i think fidelity makes jackies jackies. fidelity and long-form badassery. anyone can stand on a grate.
but Marilyn eats in bed. and she doesn't get dressed unless she has to.
ReplyDeleteso i was pretty sure i was a jackie.
ReplyDeleteso i asked a second opinion of my fiance.
and he just laughed at me. 'you're ALL jackie', he said.
ok, Naurnie, but WHY????
ReplyDeleteH just said, "Well if those are the only two choices, you're a Jackie."
ReplyDeleteWhatever.
i have to disagree, esb. i am for sure a jackie in a marilyn body. my sister (same body), however, is definitely a marilyn... and would DEFINITELY say she's a marilyn.
ReplyDeleteand lauren, i LOVE marilyn AND jackie. i think they're both badass in their own way. for me, the difference is their sexual appeal. marilyns are overtly, in your face sexy; like the feather love girl. jackies are sexy in a more mysterious way, a way that only a select few get to see.
what a post!
ReplyDeleteIf I had to choose, I'd say I make a measly Jackie. I lack grace, humility and poise most times but I definitely dont have M's charisma, confidence and trifling nature.
I think most hubs would say/wish their girl was a Jackie.
Great photo. Like woahmyfuckinggod great. Perfect context for the word "stirring".
i don't mean to bag on marilyn, celia, though i can see how i sounded like i did; i have a lot of sympathy for her, and i think she had heaps of talent and great comic timing (and was beautiful). her adventures as the other woman, now? those, i admit, leave me pretty cold.
ReplyDeletecan catherine deneuve be a third option? that would be boss.
I'm definitely not sophisticated enough to be a Jackie, but not fake enough to be a Marilyn. I choose Frida or Maria Felix.
ReplyDeleteyou got me lauren, i'm not fond of ho bag marilyn either.
ReplyDeletecatherine deneuve: perfect combo of m & j. very, very rare and very, VERY boss.
ESB, it's whose aura you relate to more.
ReplyDeleteactually, it's more of a Rorschach. there's no right or wrong answer or what for sure makes someone a jackie or a marilyn.
the way i see it:
jackie= refined, classic, more cerebral, gracious
marilyn= flirty, oozing with sexuality, free spirited
w/e!
ps. so THIS is what it's like to get comments on a post! how fun ;)
I'm neither but the gut is underappreciated these days, I have a "voluptuous" midsection so I'm going with Marilyn. Plus, Jackie's voice drives me absolutely insane.
ReplyDeletehahaha, sherri! but how could you resist that bonafide beale accent? ♥
ReplyDeleteI'm a Marilyn b/c I don't have the fashion sense that Jackie did.
ReplyDeleteI see it more as
ReplyDeleteJackie: strong, poised, self-reliant, together, a little cold.
Marilyn: damaged, uncontrollable, vulnerable, self-destructive, passionate.
With the right medication I'm Jackie. Without I'm Marilyn.
bravo, P&P! that's what i was TRYING to say in my not so eloquent way.
ReplyDelete"With the right medication I'm Jackie. Without I'm Marilyn." = GOLD
you like how i turned marilyn's self destructiveness into free spiritedness? hmmm...
Jackie. Actually, Audrey. But if I have to choose, Jackie.
ReplyDeleteamandar. you are so audrey.
ReplyDeleteI am just going to come out and say that my sex appeal is nowhere near amped up enough to be considered a Marilyn. However, this convo has continued in our house. And we have come to the conclusion that I am a Jackie with a really quirky sense of humor. I do love "The House of Yes".
ReplyDeleteoh dear god, neither please! it's like keeping up appearances vs. a giant train wreck. i choose shari lewis.
ReplyDeleteI don't possess the class nor the sex-appeal to touch upon either women. However, I'd like to think I'm a little of both.
ReplyDeleteJackie for sure. And yes, I think I know a few people who would sooner identify with MM!
ReplyDeleteboring. my husband said "you have jackie's class with marilyn's figure."
ReplyDeletewhat a cop out.
Oh wow, I've never seen a photo like this either. I think of Marilyn as such a tragic figure. Jackie, too, in a way... although certainly she went on to lead a life of her own volition after his death. Marilyn was always there for the taking, though.
ReplyDeleteFYI, that photo is not of JFK and MM. It's an imagined recreation. A photographer did a series of them. Here's a small article about it: http://theenglishmuse.blogspot.com/2009/11/intimate-pictures-of-marilyn-and-jfk.html
ReplyDeleteOh, and if I have to choose, I'd say Marilyn. Jackie holds no appeal to me. But I don't know if anyone else would agree with my own assessment! It's funny because I had thought that EVERYONE would pick Marilyn.
FK!!!!!! THANK YOU! i was SO confused. this makes so much more sense.

ReplyDeleteMy pleasure!! The photo is pretty amazing. Oh, also, I just embarassedly asked my bf what he thought, and he said, without hesitation, "Marilyn." I was like, 'Yes!' And he followed it up with, "You're a tortured soul." Oh. Well, yes.
ReplyDeletep.s. Great blog. Just discovered it!
If I had to choose I would say I feel more like a Marilyn, but like sad-eyed Marilyn not sexy Marilyn, (and, when asked, that was the woman my fiance chose as well) but the whole thing is a little too madonna-whore complex-y for me. The picture makes me sad in a happy way or happy in a sad way, I can't tell. Thanks for sharing it. Oh wait...I do love Peonies answer...I choose that.
ReplyDeleteHLYSHT It's an imagined recreation!?
ReplyDeleteSheesh.
Good to know.
Ps, I love you and I just wanted to add to the comment thread. Double digits!
Comments nourish.
the picture is stunning. so much emotion, esp. if you look at it as
ReplyDeleteMarilyn and JFK.
The answer to the Jackie or Marilyn question ...I don't know.
I like to believe I am a Liv. And I am still figuring out what that
means every day.
wow that's a good repro. I thought for sure.
ReplyDeleteyah I'm a jackie, even the hair and the skin. I'm all about twinsets and pearls
twinsets. I KNEW there was a reason I'm not a Jackie.
ReplyDeleteYou know what, I'm really more of a Patsy or Edina.
ReplyDeleteFUCK YES, KRIS. NEXT POST COMING UP!!!!
ReplyDeleteemilia jane, yes! that is exactly it- the madonna-whore complex. that being said, i'm surprised everyone said jackie. jackie has class, elegance, and intelligence, but i would always rather be marilyn. she's self-destructive and crazy and sexy and flirty and fun, but at least she's not boring.
ReplyDeleteActually, and I could be wrong, I think those photos are from a magazine-I can't remember which-about a year ago. They were actors posing. I think the real life pair were a bit more subtle.
